Painting with light …

I recently received a beautiful candy dish and I knew from the moment that I lifted it from the box that I needed to figure out how to light it in a way that would show of the color and design without harsh flash induced highlights.   I have been trying to figure out how to light it from within, but haven’t found a good solution yet.   Thinking about low light photography and light painting, I decided to try a little experiment.  I sat the dish on a solid blue surface and set up my camera on the tripod.  Once I had set a small aperture, set the shutter speed to “bulb” and manually focused on the candy dish, I turned off the lights.  I pressed the shutter release and then “painted” the candy dish with a small LED flashlight.  After a couple of images, I decided to try to soften the light a bit by wrapping tissue paper over the end of the flashlight.  Then I used the amber “gel” and diffuser from my Speedlight.
