Timing is everything …

or it is frequently in photography.   Yesterday morning I was admiring the sky on my way to work.  It was a bit past sunrise, but there were clouds across the sky giving a the sky those beautiful hues of pinks and yellows.  When I checked the cleardarksky.com last night, I noticed that there was likely to be some cloud cover this morning and thought I should plan to leave a bit earlier and maybe capture an image of the sun rising through the clouds, but still low on the horizon.  Where I live, I really have no view of the horizon in any direction.  But there is a hill not to far away … and the businesses located there don’t open too early … so that’s where I headed this morning shortly after sunrise.

Unfortunately, I’d also picked up the newspaper from the box as I was leaving.   When I arrived at my chosen vantage point, the sun a bright yellow globe partially hidden in those deep pink stripes near the horizon.   But a headline caught my eye as I moved the newspaper and reached for my camera bag underneath.   I read the first couple of paragraphs, but then as I was laying the newspaper aside, my smartphone beeped.  Unfortunately, it was not one of the “normal” beeps the ones that I ignore … it was a beep that only occurs when someone on the “short list” has sent an e-mail, txt, or other electronic missive … so I looked at it.  And then I finally pulled my camera out of the bag and looked back up at the sunrise …
