In addition to visiting Harpers Ferry, we spent the night in nearby Shepherdstown and then after breakfast walked around town. We accidentally left the map and descriptions of the local points of interest between the paper placements and our emptied plates in Betty’s Restaurant on German Street. We had wandered a bit and noticed what we learned later is called Town Run. We stopped in at the Visitor’s Center to get a map and walking tour brochure. One of the helpful employees mentioned the old tobacco warehouse down near the Potomac River and recommended that we check it out for views of the river and the various bridges. We ended up following Town Run. The photo below shows the run tumbling over rocks on its way to the river with the tobacco warehouse as a backdrop.
From the brochure: “More than six natural springs feed Town Run before it enters the south end of town. It never floods, nor runs dry; it meanders through backyards, under houses, across alleys and beneath five streets. This setting was conducive to millers, tanners, potters, smiths and other artisans. As a result, by 1775, the town boasted 1,000 inhabitants.”
